I have been preparing the Bible Study on the 10 Plagues for our summer day camp. It is one of my favorite lessons that demonstrate God’s power against the Egyptians’ many gods. He destroyed their economy!
God turned the Nile into blood to show power over Hapi, the god of the River nile. He sent frogs to show power over Heka, the Toad goddess. Gnats/lice showed His power over Geb, their god of earth. He sent fleas against their god of insects, Khepfi. God killed their livestock to show power over Apis, the bull god. Boils demonstrated his power against their god Throth, god of medicine. God sent hail and fire against Nut, the sky goddess, Seth, the protector of crops, and Shu god of the violence from the sky. He sent locusts against Anubis, god of the field. Darkness covered the land, to show that God was stronger than Ra, the sun god. Death of the first born, was sent to show His power over Isis, protector of children.
The children are quick to tell you that they don’t worship those gods. Then I ask, “What are the gods you have in your life.” Of course they say they don’t have or worship other gods. I ask then if they only had time to do one of these which would they choose:
Video games or reading your Bible
Going to church or staying home to play
Giving your money to God or buying new clothes.
No, we don’t have little statues sitting around our home. But we often make idols out of the things we love: Cars, homes, clothes, and any activity that doesn’t have anything to do with God.
Now, my last question to the kids and you: If God were to send a plague against the idol in your life what would the plague be? (The kids decided the plague against video games and tv would be bugs send to destroy our electricity.)
Exodus 20: 2- 5 (CIV) 2 “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt where you were slaves. 3 “You must not have any other gods except me. 4 “You must not make for yourselves an idol that looks like anything in the sky above or on the earth below or in the water below the land. 5 You must not worship or serve any idol, because I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God.
