Stewardship ~ the financial aspect of being a Christian

There is a television commercial that says, "Life comes at you fast," and the idea is to be prepared. This is a true statement, and we need to be prepared in more ways than just being insured. The average person is subjected to over 100 commercials each day if they watch television a few hours in the evening and read the morning newspaper. This does not even count those that yell out to us from the radio, magazine, and the internet and even sometimes from our cell phones. Somebody is always hawking a product or service they want us to buy. Where are we going to spend out money and what do we expect from that spending?

Jesus talked about this in his Sermon the Mount when He said, "So do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasurers in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasurer is, there your heart will be also." (Matthew 6:19-21, NIV).

Where are we putting our treasurers and what do we expect to gain from our investments? Do any of them have eternal values? God made everything, and what we have, has been given to us by Him to manage. We can see ourselves in the same position as the servants in the parable Jesus told about the owner who took a long trip, and while he was gone, he asked his servants to manage his affairs. When he returned, he required of them an accounting as to what they had done with the talents that were given to them to use. Two of the three demonstrated their management skills and doubled their investments, but one did nothing; therefore, he gained nothing. This angered the owner who took away from his use what had been given to him. (See Matthew 25:14-30).

You and I are called to be faithful stewards of what God has given to us to use and manage. We have an opportunity to return to Him a portion of what He has given to us and what already belongs to Him.

We have included in the following links some other useful information, thoughts ideas and materials to help you define what God expects from you, and you can do to help Him in the world. All of us would do anything to assist our families; we also should do what we can to enhance the work of the Kingdom of God in the world. Give some thought as to what you feel God wants you to do with some of your resources and how you can be a better steward for the Lord.
